Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are solitary birds and generally only come in contact with one another for mating. Both male and female will aggressively defend feeding locations, particularly in late summer as they are preparing for migration. During migration they fly non-stop across the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of at least 500 miles.

The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is a tiny iridescent green bird where males have a black patch on the throat that reflects bright ruby red in the sun light. They are migratory and spend most of the winter in Mexico and summer in the United States and southern Canada. These birds are able to hover, fly up and down, sideways and is the only bird that can fly backwards. They chatter and buzz to communicate with other hummingbirds. The wings beat between 55 and 75 times a second, depending on if they are hovering or in motion. They build their nests from plant material, spider webs and lichen, which they glue on the outside of the nest for camouflage.
