The male Northern Cardinal is a bright red bird with a black mask and a large red bill and crest. Cardinals are abundant across Eastern United States, Canada, and Mexico. Generally cardinals remain in one territory year round, however they will migrate to avoid extreme weather. Both sexes of cardinals are song birds and males will use clear whistles to defend territory. Both have a distinct alarm call. Males feed the young of the first brood while the female builds a second nest.
